A Look Inside my Studio: Beginning a Mixed Media Painting with Gouache

The process starts with pools of paint.

This month, I’m beginning some new mixed media paintings on Yupo paper (Yupo paper makes up one of the layers—my pieces are made with multiple layers of paper).

I start with abstract color fields of paint, which are applied very wet. The paint changes as it dries in beautiful and interesting ways and I let the patterns that form guide the imagery I paint next.

Two paintings drying on the studio tables.

After these dry, I’ll start carving out imagery with mostly water and a brush.

Once the paint has dried, I start removing some of it to create imagery. At this point, the process becomes a back and forth between adding and removing paint.

Starting to carve out imagery.

These two pieces are inspired by the wild, tumbling beauty of the summer garden, full of intense color and overgrowth.

Love the brilliant colors of the summer garden.
